Bangkok Markets: Talad Iam Sombat

This month we stopped in on the banana fair at Seacon already, so now we’ll head up the road a kilometer or two and visit a real fresh market. I also need some food for the coming week, so let us stay not on the order of our going but be gone at once…

Bangkok of course is not known for being a pristine sort of city, in fact it is a rather rugged town really. Sidewalks are something people in a lot of areas have heard about or seen in movies, and where there are sidewalks space on them is at a serious premium. And I wouldn’t have it any other way……

So we can wait here for a second so the broom and mop man can get his load across the bridge before I amble onto it. I do need a new mop too……

And it is of course a terrible idea to try and shop for food on an empty stomach, so we had better stop for a quick snack first. This lady is here earlier than most of the other carts around the outside of the market and stays later. 10 baht for three of these lovely little pancakes wrapped around quails’ egg and two kinds of sausage, I think I’ll have six……

Now, it looks like rain so we’ll need to hurry and grab a few things then head home. So vegetables and protein, let’s see what’s for sale today……

Bit of a line here, but this guy’s veg looks best, and the line backs me up on that. Great prices too. So some onions, kale, spinach, and something to throw into my omelet tomorrow………

And my favorite stop inside the Talad Iam Market in Bangkok, the dried stuff from the sea lady. Believe it or not I’m really not that adventurous in this corner of the market, I tend to limit myself to the dried shrimp.  They are an excellent addition to trail mixes, salads, and my signature shrimp omelet (I’ll share the recipe later this month)

And some more of my delightful dried little buddies. What markets in the Bangkok would you like to take a closer look at? Drop me line here and I’ll do what I can to get out to any you ask about and get some pictures and descriptions for you. I love shopping for food almost as much as I love eating it.

Next time I’ll show you the nighttime face of Talad Iam Market, with the Islamic desserts and black pepper chicken…
