Wat Phra Mahathat

This temple is probably is one of the most famous spots in Ayutthaya  that attracts thousands of visitors because of the Buddha head entwined within the roots of a banyan tree. It easily became one of the most recognizable symbols of Thailand.

Wat Phra Mahatthat, like the other temples in the area, this one was so severely destroyed that you will see a line of headless statues everywhere inside the temple vicinity.

Wat Phra Si Sanphet

In the Royal days of ancient Ayutthaya kingdom, Wat Phra Si Sanphet,  was a part of the Royal Palace complex and the temple used to be a place where the royalty performed rituals. These days, there were no resident monks here and they were only invited on special religious occasions.  The temple was first built in the 14th century and reigning its glory until the second half of the 17th century.

If there’s one statue that is lucky to be left intact compared to other structures in Ayutthaya Historical Park, Wat Lokayasutharam is one of them. This temple is a popular site of Thai Buddhists and a must-visit destination of travelers with its giant reclining Buddha, which represents Buddha lying down, and is a major iconic symbol of Buddhism.

Wat Chaiwatthanaram

Wat Chaiwatthanaram was built in traditional Khmer style, similar to Angkor Wat in  Siem Riep, Cambodia. Despite its ruined facade, Wat Chaiwatthanaram is still a captivating sight to behold.

Wat Ratchaburana

Located across the road from Wat Mahathat,  Wat Ratchaburana must be seen even from afar in Ayutthaya day trip. This temple was considered as the most well-preserved ruins in the Ayutthaya Historical Park area.

Wat Yai Chai Mongkhol

Wat Yai Chai Mongkhol is probably the newest addition to the group which is just more than 100 years of age. Try to explore inside the temple to witness the  preserved ash and some hidden treasures kept through the centuries.
